Health project funding in hospitals, hospices, research and therapy centres

Haven House Hospice

Haven House is a children's hospice offering respite, end of life and palliative care to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. In 2016 we funded part of a new “Butterfly Project” to provide a choice of hospice services to families in their own home. Part of this was to enable provision of at home play sessions with a trained care team, giving both the child and the family or carers much needed support in their own home. This brought multiple benefits to the whole family and all those involved in the child’s care. Following the success of this pilot project Haven House were able to secure funding from Comic Relief to enable this provision to be offered on a bigger and long term scale.

Haven House Hospice promotes the best possible quality of life and care for every baby, child or young person with a life-limited condition and their family. They provide holistic care for children, as well as specialist nursing care this includes music and play therapy and therapeutic yoga. They also provide family support services for parents, siblings and the extended family. They support an ethnically and culturally diverse population, 30% of families are Muslim, and one of their core values is to engage with, and respect, the diversity of all communities.

Sick Children's Trust (SCT)

Sick Children’s Trust was established in 1982 and currently runs eight “home from home” facilities for families of critically ill children around the country. Each of the houses is located close to the children’s wards at major hospitals and provides families with free, high-quality accommodation close to their child’s side. They support around 3000 families every year.

The benefits to families and children of this support are well-documented. Sick Children’s Trust is highly experienced in providing both practical and emotional support to families, supporting them at the most difficult time. The houses enable families to live as normally as possible, with excellent and comfortable facilities, giving them the best chance to concentrate on their child’s recovery and on keeping the family together.

In 2011 we funded renovations to the "home from home" facility supporting families in The Royal London Hospital and in 2013 we funded a room in the new facility supporting families at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

PACE Centre

PACE was founded in 1990 as a family-centred charity that provides innovative education for children with motor disorders. Learning is tailored to each child’s individual needs, and is based on the belief that every child has the ability to learn. PACE aims to provide a first-class education, including therapy and support, for children from birth to the age of 18 who have cerebral palsy, related motor disorders and development delay. Support and guidance is also given to their families. The specialist teams devise learning programmes that integrate and blend theory and practice from a range of disciplines, making sure that each child can fully access their education, become active learners, and reach their full potential.

Our funding was for new specialist equipment including mats, swings and hoists. Swings and hammocks are an essential part of the occupational therapists’ toolkit to aid the children’s balance, strength and spatial awareness. Hoists also help transfer children from wheelchair to seat or floor.
