In 2018 we have funded these four projects -
MASAMBIRO-UK Building four toilet blocks to create a cleaner and healthier learning environment for over 460 pupils in Malawi - Kunyanja Secondary School is a wonderful success story. Over 14 years Masambiro UK has helped create an outstanding school in an area largely deprived of secondary education. The school now includes a science laboratory, a library, an examination hall and a community garden. A bursary system is also well established and excellent exam results have ensured much greater access to university education. Several former pupils have now returned from university to teach at the school.
Supporting a disadvantaged child through the Cornish-based ‘Realising Ambition’ project
We are very glad to be supporting Trelya for a second year. Trelya provide one to one mentoring and support for specific children in need. The project gives these children a chance to make better choices – in health and lifestyle, in developing self-control, and learning to adjust to different situations. Above all giving the child consistent care and love from a trusted adult over a long term period. Their results speak for themselves and you can read all about their work here.
HOT LINE MEALS SERVICE (LONDON)
Setting up Yummy Meals to Make Yummy Kids and provide freshly cooked nutritious meals to economically disadvantaged young people Hot Line Meals Service is a voluntary run organisation that provides daily, hot nutritious meals to people who are unable to shop or cook for themselves. Our funding will enable them to take referrals of a further 15 children in need of this invaluable support. The importance and huge benefits of a daily, hot and nutritious meal for children are well documented.
WAMBA COMMUNITY TRUST
Providing funding for a new classroom and other equipment for pupils at Ntepes Pre and Primary School Wamba Community Trust works to provide the essential infrastructure for children to benefit from a good education in a rural part of Kenya. These developed facilities result in better school attendance and an increase in opportunities for learning

MASAMBIRO UK Building four toilet blocks to create a cleaner and healthier learning environment for over 460 pupils
Masambiro UK was established in 2004 to fundraise and provide support to Kunyanja Secondary School in Nkhata Bay, northern Malawi. Thanks to continuing support for Kunyanja Secondary, Masambiro UK over 14 years has helped create an outstanding school in an area largely deprived of secondary education. However, the school’s popularity means it has become a victim of its own success. Over 460 pupils in four classes (up from 250 pupils only three years ago) attend the school by day, in addition to 150 night school students. A bursary system has been established that keeps fees to a minimum (there are no free secondary schools in Malawi), and excellent exam results have ensured much greater access to university education. Capital sums raised already by Masambiro UK have helped to create a science laboratory, a library, an examination hall and a community garden. Funds for running costs ensure donations are also made towards the cost of textbooks and science laboratory equipment.
Our £5,950 donation will help provide funding to build four toilet blocks comprising two toilets each for girls and boys, together with hand wash facilities. There are direct benefits of improving health and hygiene for pupils by providing clean facilities, offering greater privacy, and reducing queuing. Significant additional benefits will stem from better attendance, particularly by girls beginning to menstruate who previously might have shunned school altogether because of crowded and overused facilities.
TRELYA Supporting a disadvantaged child through the Cornish-based ‘Realising Ambition’ project
Trelya’s ‘Realising Ambition’ project is currently in its sixth year, and continues to support 17 children living in chaotic households where there is severe disadvantage, often with parents who themselves had very difficult childhoods. Children may be living in an environment where aggression, violence, and alcohol and drug misuse are the norm, and where there may be no semblance of a normal family life. Treyla’s professionally-trained youth workers dedicate themselves to helping children break this cycle of social exclusion by providing consistent support and a safe place to come. Evidence confirms that children brought up in deprivation and chaos who then receive consistent care and love from an adult who stays with them for the long term will benefit from life-changing improvements and new better prospects. There is clear evidence of increases in resilience, self-worth, confidence, motivation and aspiration – as well as improving school attendance and engagement.
Our second contribution of £6,500 will again go towards the costs of the Realising Ambition Project, and Treyla plans to use the donation to cover the full costs of supporting one child through the project. The project aims above all to help children make better choices – in health and lifestyle, in developing self-control, and learning to adjust to different situations.
HOT LINE MEALS SERVICE (LONDON)
Setting up Yummy Meals to Make Yummy Kids and provide freshly cooked nutritious meals to economically disadvantaged young people Hot Line Meals Service is an organisation established in 1997 that provides daily, hot nutritious meals to people who are unable to shop or cook for themselves. Dysfunctional families may be in crisis with a parent or child suffering from physical or mental illness, with short-term (or long-term) disability. Hot Line Meals Service aims to help enable disadvantaged children and young people to flourish by providing them with vital nutrition. Their parents may not have the time or the skills to cook a well-balanced meal, and they generally lack the resources to order costly ready-made meals. With 90% of users on means tested benefits, many are forced to survive on pot noodles or other cheap unhealthy convenience food. This can hinder children’s development, lead to poor health outcomes, and hasten young people’s risk of obesity.
Our contribution of £3000 will go towards the setting up of the new project Yummy Meals to Make Yummy Kids. This will augment the existing service, and will ultimately provide freshly cooked, hot nutritious meals to 15 economically disadvantaged children and young people over a period of 24 weeks. The meals will be cooked, packed and delivered by up to 175 volunteers of all ages, and should provide a focus on family time by enabling all family members to spend positive time together when eating the meal.
WAMBA COMMUNITY TRUST
Providing a funding for a new classroom and other equipment for pupils at Ntepes Pre and Primary School The Wamba Community Trust was set up in 2005 to help students in the Wamba district of Kenya to receive a good school education. Since its foundation, the Trust has supported pupils (mainly girls) through secondary and into further education; provided buildings, water supply and basic facilities to several pre and primary schools; funded medical treatment, provided football kits and supplied teaching equipment, books and pens to a primary school. The Trust’s work has provided the essential infrastructure for children to benefit from a good education in a rural and semi-arid environment where secure basics can provide disadvantaged children with help and support, regardless of religion, race or socio-economic background. Direct benefits lie in improved attendance and an increase in learning development.
Our contribution of £1,260 will go towards the refurbishment and renovation of a classroom at the Ntepes Pre and Primary School, allowing all the pupils to be taught in a more spacious and secure environment. Better attendance and an increase in opportunities for learning development should result. This in turn should lead to an overall improvement in the children’s education and following on for their future.
